I’m currently in Mexico City because when I booked my flight the cheapest way to reach Buenos Aires was to stop here. Landing was quite an experience as the city is enormous; urbanity for as far as the eye can see with only the occasional skyscraper and soccer field breaking up the sprawl.
Even though I’m only passing through here I still had to pass through customs. When I talked to a couple American people (actually from Stamford, CT) who flew in on the same flight I had about the flight I was connecting to, I was thrown off by their startled reaction when I mentioned the time it departed…half an hour after I reached the back of the immigration line. I found a way to skip to the front of the line, passed through immigration, then raced across the large airport to security (which I didn’t know I had to pass through again so I had to dump all the water I’d accumulated to avoid Moctezuma’s Revenge…only to be detained because my carry-on had something apparently tiny and suspicious inside. They never told me what it was although they searched my bag until they were satisfied. So I ran with my backpack (a large Kelty bag) all the way to the gate, only to find, of course, that my fellow Connecticut residents were wrong and I had an hour to spare.
…thus I’m still in Mexico.
